JJ (played by Dave Bautista) is a highly experienced agent who makes a serious mistake during a mission due to carelessness, resulting in its failure. Afterwards, JJ and his partner Bobbi (played by Kristen Schaal) are assigned to surveil a mother-daughter duo, Sophie (played by Chloe Coleman) and Kate (played by Parisa Fitz-Henley). To their surprise, the impeccable disguise of JJ is seen through by the nine-year-old Sophie in an instant. JJ asks Sophie to keep his identity a secret, using it as leverage, and Sophie makes a series of demands on JJ, including picking her up from school and spending time with her. During this process, the combination of a tough guy and a little girl leads to a string of comedic situations, with Sophie even trying to set JJ up with her mother, Kate. As time goes by, the bond between JJ and the mother-daughter pair grows stronger.
