During the Anti-Japanese War, a team of Eighth Route Army soldiers arrived at Ma Muci in Baole Village, Yimeng Mountains, accompanied by donated dairy cows from international friends. The villagers, who had lived in the mountains for years, had never seen such black-and-white, high-yield cows, and they were amazed. Soon, the Japanese troops approached, and the Eighth Route Army urgently retreated, leaving the dairy cows in the care of the villagers. The poor and timid villagers were worried that the cows would bring disaster upon them, so they selected a cow caretaker through a method of drawing red beans. The widowed woman Jiu'er (played by Yan Ni) helped the impoverished Niu Er (played by Huang Bo) draw lots, ultimately making Niu Er the unfortunate "lucky one." After the brutal and bloody sweep, all the villagers were killed, leaving only Niu Er and the dairy cow as survivors.
