During the Chui Gong era, an astonishing series of murders threw the city of Luoyang into chaos. Most of the victims were a pair of men and women, and the killer moved like a ghost, leaving no clues behind. Rumors spread among the people that this was punishment from heaven for the Empress's misdeeds. Eunuch Cui was ordered to investigate thoroughly, but there were no results. Ministers advised that Di Renjie should have a try. Although Di Renjie had different political views from the Empress, he ultimately accepted her arrangement, as the matter involved the people's suffering, with a deadline to solve the case; otherwise, he would bear the responsibility as the "murderer." Initially, Di Renjie was required to work on the case while confined to his cell. Understanding the Empress's intention, he agreed and asked for two kind prison guards as helpers. Di Renjie was moved from his original cell to a tower from which he could see the entire city of Luoyang. In the new prison, he met the long-awaited "eye" — his trusted aide, Eunuch Cui. Through Cui's description, Di Renjie quickly reconstructed the murder scene, believing it to be a highly premeditated series of ritualistic murders with a special meaning. The victims had the same cause of death, and the killer used the bodies to perform some ritual to influence others' fortunes. Just as Di Renjie and Eunuch Cui were struggling to find leads, another murder occurred in Luoyang. Upon investigation, it turned out that the man was the Empress's personal physician, Wang Pu, while the woman was the wife of an ordinary merchant. Di Renjie determined from the silk thread left at the scene that it was typical light silk from Hangzhou, which, when woven into clothing, appeared like gauze, making it a favorite material for women. Right across from the murder scene was the Misty Rain Pavilion, suggesting a significant connection between the perpetrator and the pavilion. Eunuch Cui prepared to go to the Misty Rain Pavilion for investigation, and before leaving, Di Renjie handed him a pair of small bells, one of which he kept. Di Renjie could perceive the murder scene through the bell. Upon arriving at the Misty Rain Pavilion, Eunuch Cui followed the clues into the boudoir of Helian Yunzhu — the Qingcheng Pavilion. He discovered it was directly opposite the loft where Physician Wang Pu was murdered. When Eunuch Cui shook the bell, the one in Di Renjie's hand, far away in his tower prison, began to ring on its own without wind. Helian Yunzhu unexpectedly lost her composure and made a strange noise. Realizing there was something wrong in the room, Eunuch Cui was about to find the hidden chamber's mechanism when the owner barged in, forcing him to abandon the search. Eunuch Cui then listed Helian Yunzhu from Qingcheng Pavilion as a key suspect.
