The story takes place in a rundown apartment building, home to six families. The silk factory employee Yuan Ruisan (played by Wang Xianzhi) has been suspended, but he pretends to be busy at work, even his wife (played by Shu Xiuwen) is unaware of the truth. Sun Rumei and Yu Lianzhu are dancers working in a nightclub; although they dress glamorously every day, the nightclub is struggling and they are financially strained.
