Duke Kant (played by Jean Reno) is a 12th-century nobleman who arrives at the castle to marry the princess, but is persecuted by treacherous men. His wine glass is poisoned with a witch's potion, causing him to drink a hallucinogenic drug. In a daze, Kant kills the princess and is captured and thrown into prison. The servant André (played by Christian Clavier) goes to find a sorcerer to bring Kant back to before the incident. However, the careless sorcerer mistakenly grabs the wrong potion, and as a result, Kant and André end up in 21st-century Chicago. They meet Kant's descendant Julia (played by Christina Applegate) and learn that if they don’t return to the 12th century in time, Princess Rosalind will not be resurrected, and their lineage will disappear.
