Ellen (played by Meryl Streep) and Barry (played by James Corden) were once New York's top stars, but due to changes in the times, their careers have plummeted, and their planned Broadway show ends up being overlooked. Meanwhile, Emma (played by Jo Ellen Pellman), a girl living in Indiana, is also feeling troubled. She and her girlfriend Alyssa (played by Ariana DeBose) want to attend their school's prom as a couple, but they face rejection. When Ellen and Barry learn of this news, they see an opportunity and decide to help the two girls, hoping to revive their careers through this chance. Little do they know, this choice will change the fates of all four of them forever.
