Tom Jones (played by Albert Finney) is the illegitimate son of a gentleman, later adopted by another. He is naturally exuberant and handsome, and the daughter of the estate owner, Sophia (played by Susannah York), falls in love with him. However, they face interference from her cousin, Blifil (played by David Warner). After a series of entanglements, the notorious Tom Jones decides to leave his hometown to seek a place for himself in the world. Shortly after Tom's departure, the heartbroken Sophia sets out on her journey as well, and the two reunite at a female merchant's home, driven by fate. Later, Blifil arrives in London, seeking revenge on Tom. Under Blifil's scheming, Tom is sentenced to the gallows, but just as he faces execution, Sophia's father arrives in time to unravel Blifil's plot and save Tom's life.
