In order to strengthen their marriage, Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) and Tami-Lynn (played by Jessica Barth) have the idea of having a child. After trying various methods without success, they decide to adopt. However, at this point, Ted discovers that the government does not recognize him as a real "person," but merely as "property." As a result, he is unable to adopt a child and loses all his civil rights as a "person"—his credit card is revoked, he loses his job, and even his marriage to Tami-Lynn becomes meaningless. Angered, Ted discusses it with his friend John (played by Mark Wahlberg), and they decide to sue. They find a novice lawyer Samantha (played by Amanda Seyfried), and the three of them join forces to fight for "bear rights."
