In the early 1960s, various industries across the country aspired to emulate Lei Feng, and a restaurant in Suzhou called "De Yue Lou" was no exception. The waitstaff, including Master Shen (Fang Xiaoxiao) and Xiao Gu (Gu Yue'e), were enthusiastic, polite, and responsive to customer requests. However, Master Shen's apprentice Yang Yousheng (Xiao Yang Tianxiao) believed that "serving others" was shameful and often lost his temper with customers. He was determined to become a "worker much more dignified than a waiter." Master Shen and others criticized him, and he promised to control his temper in the future. Another waiter, Old Zhang (Zhang Huan'er), had a work attitude that was neither good nor bad, falling somewhere in between. County Commerce Bureau Section Chief Wang (Huang Ying) came to "De Yue Lou" in disguise to experience life, assigned to Yang Yousheng's team. For the new colleague, Old Wang, Yang Yousheng with great wisdom shared his experience: customers are hot-tempered, and if they lose their temper, one must suppress it. — Section Chief Wang chuckled but was learning from Master Shen everywhere; Yang Yousheng struggled to manage his own anger, often erupting with customers. Colleagues advised him to serve with a smile, but his almost frozen exaggerated grin continuously scared customers away. Yang's mother (Ding Fengying) believed that if her son had a girlfriend, he would change his bad temper, so she secretly asked a neighbor to introduce a girl to him, only to find out the girl had been scolded by him when she dined at "De Yue Lou." Yang Yousheng felt quite awkward, caught between choices. He wanted to be a worker, but since the Commerce Bureau hadn't approved his transfer yet, he impatiently went to express his determination to the tea-picking factory's director, only to be surprised when the director mentioned that his future job might be as a restaurant waiter instead of a tea picker. On his bike ride home, Yang Yousheng became increasingly frustrated, and a flock of geese he encountered became the last straw; he lost control and fell off his bike, fracturing his bones. The experience of seeking medical attention and Master Shen's comparison of waitstaff status between the new and old society led Yang Yousheng to slowly start seeking reasons within himself. When he learned that Old Wang was actually Section Chief Wang and that Xiao Gu had a "high-ranking father," he felt even more ashamed.
