For the little dog Max (voiced by Patton Oswalt), life in the present is happy and wonderful. The arrival of his owner Katie's (voiced by Ellie Kemper) baby into the world makes Max feel a bit lost and threatened, but he quickly finds his place. He does his best to protect his little owner, trying to shield him from any outside harm, completely unaware of his own exhaustion. While on vacation in the countryside with his owner’s family, Max's newly made animal friends gradually help him relax. On the other hand, the rabbit Snowball (voiced by Kevin Hart) has a nervous breakdown, often possessed by fantasies of being a superhero. By chance, he discovers animals in a circus that are being abused, and thus resolves to save them from their plight...
