Mr. Hulot (played by Jacques Tati) arrives in Paris on business and is immediately shocked by the ultra-modern World Exposition buildings. He quickly gets lost in this awe-inspiring high-tech structure, with its exquisite state-of-the-art equipment, dazzling exhibition landscapes, and visitors from around the world that leave him in wonder. By the time Mr. Hulot remembers to seek out the person he needs to meet, night has fallen. After discussing business, Mr. Hulot finds himself at a newly renovated nightclub. The midnight atmosphere is like daylight, and the men and women inside are in high spirits. Naturally, Mr. Hulot joins their revelry. In a moment of inspiration, he brings down some of the newly decorated ceiling, causing chaos inside. Surprisingly, the guests not only are not disheartened but enjoy themselves even more. Before one knows it, morning arrives, and Paris has a unique charm after a night of revelry. This comedy film "Playtime," written and directed by the famous French comedian Jacques Tati, uses a nearly monochrome tone and a large 70mm canvas to transform the coldness of the steel-and-glass world into a disjointed surreal image. The film has almost no dialogue but cleverly employs sound effects and the expressive physical movements of the actors, showcasing a strong early silent film style.
