Lawyer Gavin (Danny DeVito) is in his office telling a young man seeking a divorce the story of "The War of the Roses": Oliver (Michael Douglas) and his wife Barbara (Kathleen Turner) met at an auction and quickly married and had children. As a lawyer, Oliver is busy with his work while Barbara, a former gymnast, is devoted to being a wife and mother, and the family lives a life that all their friends envy. After they achieve all their dreams for the family (living in a mansion, children going to college, a house full of antiques and collectibles), Barbara starts a catering business, but their relationship begins to show problems that lead to divorce. They are stubborn over the division of their house, turning the mansion into a battleground, with cherished possessions becoming weapons against each other, and even their pets used as tools for revenge...
