In Germany in 1939, a 9-year-old girl named Liesel and her brother are forced to be sent to a foster family on the outskirts of Munich. Unfortunately, her 6-year-old brother dies on the way. After a somber funeral, Liesel unexpectedly receives her first book, "The Grave Digger's Handbook." This will be one of the 14 books that bring her endless comfort. She is a孤苦的孩子, her father branded as a communist and taken away by the Nazis; her mother subsequently goes missing. With the help of her foster father, who plays the accordion, she learns to read. Despite the hardships of life, she discovers something more irresistible than food—books. She can't help but start stealing books. Liesel, the poor girl referred to as "The Book Thief" by Death, struggles to survive in war-torn Germany and astonishingly helps those around her who are suffering too.
