Tax attorney Phil Foster (Steve Carell) and real estate agent’s wife Claire Foster (Tina Fey) are an ordinary middle-aged couple living in New Jersey, raising two children and leading a tired and routine life. Influenced by a friend's separation, Phil whimsically decides to change their weekly dinner date to the city, dining at a newly opened seafood restaurant in Manhattan. Without a reservation, they take someone else's table, only to find themselves kidnapped mid-meal by two strangers who threaten them at gunpoint, demanding a flash drive back. Confused and terrified, the Fosters attempt to escape and seek help from Claire's former client, Holbrook (Mark Wahlberg), but still can't shake their pursuers. They even have to impersonate a pimp and a dancer to infiltrate the strip club of mob boss Joe Moreto (Ray Liotta), leading to a series of humiliating events.
