Chen Village Master (played by Donnie Yen) has a miserly salt merchant for a father. Due to the Master studying in the village, he gains his father's favoritism, while his unfortunate older brother, known as Oilcake, can only work as a laborer in the salt field. Nevertheless, the Master still regards his brother as a close relative and helps him with work from time to time. The Master is nimble and enjoys showing off. At school, he punishes a wealthy family's spoiled son, who later ambushes the Master but ends up seriously injured. Enraged, the rich family hires the mute assassin Tie Wuqing to kill the Master’s family. Tie Wuqing kills the Master’s father and brother while the Master is out. With no home to return to, the Master wanders the streets and unexpectedly encounters a puppeteer (played by Yuan Xiangren) skilled in Tai Chi, who forces him to work hard in their household. The puppeteer's wife, Fat Mei (played by Shen Dianxia), is also a martial arts expert. The Master works in their home but eventually cannot bear the exhaustion and leaves. Tie Wuqing pursues him, and the Master, unable to fight back, returns to the puppeteer's home. From then on, the Master dedicates himself to mastering Tai Chi, determined to avenge his father and brother…
