In 1965, the Indonesian government was overthrown by a military regime, and those who opposed the military dictatorship were labeled as "communists," facing a bloody massacre. Within a year, over a million "communists" perished, including farmers and some local Chinese. The film's protagonist, Anwar Congo, and his friends participated in the killings of that era, and he is now a senior figure in Indonesia's largest paramilitary organization, Pemuda Pancasila. Anwar and his friends accepted the director's invitation to reenact how they executed those "communists" on camera. Through filmmaking, they recreated the scenes from back then, taking up the blood-stained wires used for strangling. Anwar recounts his story, which includes his youthful admiration for American gangster films, while the paramilitary organization he belongs to, Pemuda Pancasila, is seen by many as Indonesia's largest gang...
