In 1962, four ordinary young men—Curt Henderson (played by Richard Dreyfuss), Steve Bolander (played by Ron Howard), John Milner (played by Paul Le Mat), and Terry "The Toad" Fields (played by Charles Martin Smith)—gather one evening to bid farewell to Curt and Steve, who are about to leave for college out of town. Steve lends his car to Toad, who needs it to search for his love. While driving on the road, Curt hears a blonde woman say to him, "I love you!" and he eagerly wants to find her, but instead ends up picking up another girl. Meanwhile, Steve is busy dealing with his relationship with his girlfriend Laurie (played by Cindy Williams). John is preparing to race against another person. Toad meets another beautiful girl, Debbie (played by Candy Clark), and they drive out to the countryside, only to unexpectedly lose the car...
