In a small village in the northeast of England's coal mining region, Tommy Joe Ballantyne runs the last pub in the village, The Old Oak. One day, a bus full of refugees arrives in the village, as these refugees are about to settle there. Despite his meager income, Ballantyne enthusiastically helps a refugee girl named Yara, and a strong friendship develops between them. Inspired by their bond, the villagers gradually let go of their prejudices and move towards unity.
