The eccentric and inarticulate Uncle Guy Trilby (played by Jason Bateman) is already in middle age, but the shadow of dropping out of school in his youth has always haunted him. The American education system hosts a spelling bee competition called the "National Spelling Bee" that is only open to students in middle and elementary school, specifically those in eighth grade and below. By chance, Guy discovers a significant loophole in the rules of this national spelling competition. He takes advantage of a registration blind spot to enter the youth division of the spelling bee, and with his extraordinary word memory, he qualifies for the finals. However, his advanced age brings about skepticism and accusations that he is violating the competition rules. Throughout the competition, Guy develops a deep friendship with a gifted Indian boy. As the contest progresses, more and more people begin to obstruct his participation, and the true reason for Guy's involvement in this competition comes to light. This film is the directorial debut of lead actor Jason Bateman, who also wrote the script.
