Ed (Matthew McConaughey), a clerk at a video rental store, is a completely ordinary thirty-year-old man who never imagined that one day he would become a household television celebrity. It turns out that the network's program director, Cynthia (Ellen DeGeneres), faced a career setback as declining ratings threatened her position. At this critical moment, she decided to produce a large reality show that would air 24 hours a day, with Ed as the star. Soon, Ed's name resonated across the country, and with fame and profit came the dream of overnight success that he had never experienced. However, as time went on, Ed realized that his newfound fame was not all positive. The greed of people around him and the constant surveillance and constraints made him long for the simple, happy, and carefree life he once had.
