Two women, sharing similar experiences and even similar cunning, engage in a battle for fame. Velma (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is a nightclub dancer of little renown. After shooting her cheating husband in a fit of rage, she is sent to prison. Billy (Richard Gere) is a local lawyer who gains notoriety by handling murder cases; he takes on Velma's case with his own agenda in mind. By leveraging the media to hype up Velma's case, she becomes an instant sensation, and he also gains significant recognition. However, Roxie (Renée Zellweger) and her case begin to capture Billy's attention. Roxie, dreaming of becoming a star, is also charged with murder after killing her boyfriend in a rage, and Billy decides to brand her as a pitiful victim to incite even more media frenzy. Sensing the shift in the situation, Velma realizes that a rivalry with Roxie is inevitable as they both vie for prominence.
