The story takes place in France in 1977, where Robert (played by Fabrice Luchini) is an extremely authoritarian factory owner. He is not only strict and harsh with his workers but also plays the role of a traditional "head of the family" at home. The long-standing oppression has led to a peak in the workers' anger, resulting in a large-scale strike protest, demanding less work and more pay, as well as pressuring Robert to step down. At this critical moment, Robert's usually quiet wife, Suzanne (played by Catherine Deneuve), steps in. She not only uses her social skills to calm the workers' anger but also manages to get them to return to their posts. Under Suzanne's leadership, production in the factory resumes, and the working conditions for the workers improve; however, Robert, who is away on a retreat, remains completely unaware of all this.
