At the Central Station in Rio de Janeiro, Dora (played by Fernanda Montenegro) helps people write letters. However, she tears up any letters that she dislikes and even reads the contents out loud for entertainment. Dora lives in modest means and, despite her age, is still unmarried; perhaps deep down she believes that true feelings between people are not worth trusting. The arrival of a young boy, Joshua (played by Vinícius de Oliveira), begins a journey of rediscovering life for her—Joshua desperately wants to meet his father, whom he has never seen, and continually writes letters to him. After a car accident involving Joshua’s mother, Dora decides to accompany him on a trip to the northeast in search of his father. In Joshua's eyes, even though his father is a stranger, he always speaks of him with pride. Similarly, Dora has her own painful past with her father. As they search for Joshua's father, Dora's frozen heart begins to thaw because of her past experiences.
