The story takes place during World War II, where Alice (played by Gemma Arterton) is an eccentric and reclusive writer living in seclusion on a cliff by the southern coast of England, dedicating herself to studying science. One day, a boy named Frank (played by Lucas Bond) unexpectedly intrudes into Alice's isolated world. Frank comes from a war-torn London, where the brutal war has taken everything from him, leaving him an orphan. For Alice, Frank's arrival is obviously an intrusion and an upset to her routine, but she cannot bring herself to send the child away. Thus, the two begin to share their lives under the same roof. Frank's presence also awakens long-buried memories for Alice, reminding her of her time with her lover Vera (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw).
