Future writer Laura (Holliday Grainger) and her beautiful roommate Taylor (Alia Shawkat) live in a messy apartment in Dublin, with a strong desire for alcohol, jasmine, and one-night stands. However, when Laura falls for Jim (Fra Fee), a charming yet reserved classical pianist, Taylor worries that the party may soon be over. The film "Animals" is adapted from Emma Jane Unsworth's 2014 novel of the same name, telling the bittersweet story of two friends' growth and separation. Sophie Hyde's debut feature "52 Tuesdays" won the Best Director award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and she examines this contentious friendship with a refreshing, calm perspective as Laura and Taylor experience the highs of hedonism and the lows of soul-searching. Shawkat's live performance gives Taylor an anarchic comic edge that perfectly complements Greg's soulful turn, creating conflicts and creatively blocking Laura. The duo is supported by a star-studded cast, including the dreamlike drug-addicted proposer Dermot Murphy and Greg's weary yet loving sister Amy Molloy.
