Before aspiring to be a painter, Van Gogh (played by Kirk Douglas) was a promising art dealer in a gallery. After several emotional failures, he began to try to become a painter. His compassionate nature allowed him to get along harmoniously with poor miners, using his brush to depict their tragic lives. His paintings were exuberant and passionate, but did not gain appreciation from the mainstream art world. Van Gogh invited the rising Impressionist painter Gauguin (played by Anthony Quinn) to paint in the south of France together. For years, his brother Theo supported Van Gogh financially, even funding all of Gauguin's expenses to go south. Initially, the two enjoyed a harmonious collaboration, creating many high-quality works together, but due to their incompatible personalities, intense arguments gradually arose. Gauguin attempted to leave, which deeply affected Van Gogh, who tried to threaten Gauguin with a knife, causing Gauguin to flee in panic. Ultimately, Van Gogh self-mutilated and cut off his own ear. The lonely, impoverished Van Gogh was tormented by mental illness and entered the hospital for treatment multiple times. However, he never stopped painting, continuously awaiting public recognition. Eventually, he suffered a mental breakdown and ended his life with a gunshot. Anthony Quinn won the Best Supporting Actor award at the 29th Academy Awards for this film.
