The film begins with a young man (Richard Linklater) recounting a peculiar dream to a taxi driver and pondering how he ended up in the taxi, but the driver is uninterested. The young man gets out, witnesses a woman lying on the ground after an accident, and takes her handbag. The woman was killed by her son, and two policemen take the son away from their home. A street performer plays the guitar and sings, while three men in a restaurant discuss Dostoevsky and great works. One man's friend has gone missing, and a stranger reveals secrets about the American moon landing and the true reasons behind some disappearances. A young man has quietly moved out, and his roommates find numerous postcards in his room, featuring phrases torn from various books.
