City girl Anna (Amy Adams) has been in a relationship with her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) for four years, and they apply together to buy a prestigious residence in Boston's top luxury community. Anna initially thinks that Jeremy is going to propose to her, but after feeling disappointed, she follows her father's advice and flies to Dublin, the capital of Ireland, planning to propose to Jeremy, who is attending a medical conference in Dublin, on February 29, a day traditional for proposals in leap years. Unexpectedly, the flight encounters turbulence and makes an emergency landing in Cardiff, Wales. Anna takes a boat from Cardiff to the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland, where she struggles to find accommodation and ends up at a beachside inn run by local young man Declan (Matthew Goode). Declan agrees to drive Anna to Dublin the next day, but the two clash constantly and argue along the way. During their journey, they face mishaps like a car breakdown, heavy rain, delays, and posing as a married couple while staying at a farm, but these adversaries gradually get to know each other better and feelings grow between them.
