In 1927, "The Royal Rascal," starring Don Lockwood (played by Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (played by Jean Hagen), premiered in Hollywood. Due to Lina's shrill voice not matching her dazzling looks, the publicity department arranged for Don to do all the talking to maintain her star image. After the premiere, Don accidentally meets the talented dancer and singer Kathy Selden (played by Debbie Reynolds) while trying to escape from frenzied fans after pianist Cosmo Brown's (played by Donald O'Connor) car gets a flat tire, and he is deeply enchanted by her. A few weeks later, the first sound film, "The Jazz Singer," becomes a smash hit, forcing Don and Lina to change the filming approach of their new film "The Duelling Cavalier," while Kathy becomes a musical film actress. Due to poor reviews from the preview, Cosmo suggests turning "The Duelling Cavalier" into a musical, with Kathy dubbing Lina's voice, to which Kathy enthusiastically agrees. After a farewell kiss, Don is overjoyed and dances in the rain. Will Cosmo's plan work? Can Kathy step into the spotlight and receive the audience's applause?
