A young and inexperienced fairy godmother named Eleanor (played by Jillian Bell) hears that the profession of fairy godmother is at risk of disappearing. She wants to prove through action that people still need fairy godmothers, so she finds a letter from an unhappy ten-year-old girl and decides to help her. However, when she locates the "little girl," Mackenzie (Isla Fisher), she discovers that she is now a 40-year-old single mother who no longer believes in the notion of a "happy life." Eleanor decides that whether Mackenzie likes it or not, she will help her find happiness.
