The film's story is adapted from Tennessee Williams' play "Orpheus Descending." The protagonist, Val Xavier, is a guitar-singing musician who is homeless and loves to wander between cities wearing a snake-skin jacket. However, he used to be a criminal. One day, he arrives in a small town near the Mississippi River in the South, where he meets a local woman named Carol Cutrere. They fall passionately in love and become sexual partners. At the same time, Val is involved in an ambiguous relationship with his boss's wife, Mrs. Torrence, who is infatuated with him and even willing to give up everything to prevent Val from eloping with Carol. However, Mr. Torrence is not someone easily dismissed, and his hatred for Val leads him to vow revenge. Another female artist in the film, played by Maureen Stapleton, also has feelings for him.
