The film's story is adapted from Tennessee Williams' play "Orpheus Descending." The protagonist, Val Xavier, is a guitar-singing musician who is homeless and loves to wander between cities wearing a snake-skin jacket. However, he used to be a criminal. One day, he arrives in a small town near the Mississippi River in the South, where he meets a local woman named Carol Cutrere. They fall passionately in love and become sexual partners.
