In the eyes of aliens, humans on Earth are just a source of amusement for them. A group of aliens makes a bet with the fate of Earth at stake. They randomly select a person on Earth and grant him the superpower of wish fulfillment. If this person eventually becomes a greedy villain, the aliens will choose to destroy Earth. However, if this person maintains his kind nature, it means Earth still has a purpose to continue existing. Neil (Simon Pegg), an ordinary and introverted middle school teacher, becomes the chosen one whose fate is tied to the survival of Earth. After gaining superpowers, a series of amusing yet frightening incidents happen around Neil. Meanwhile, the woman he silently loves, Catherine (Kate Beckinsale), also gets caught up in the danger.
