The film "Three Bags of Rice" is adapted from the novel of the same name by Wuhan writer Wang Hengji. The novel draws inspiration from a true and touching story from Wang Hengji's hometown in Hong'an County, Hubei Province: in the early 1980s, rice continuously faced rice blast disease, leading to poor harvests. A widow, afflicted with multiple illnesses, worked hard to support her son’s education. After her son was admitted to a top high school, he had to pay 30 pounds of rice to the school every month. From then on, those 30 pounds of rice felt like 30 mountains pressing down on the mother. Witnessing his mother being harassed for debt, the sensible son tore up his admission notice and resolved to work to support the family, while his mother slapped him back to school, pushing the mother, who was losing her ability to work, onto the path of begging. Although weak, a mother is strong for her child. The mother secretly left home to beg in distant towns before dawn, returning home late at night. She faced dog bites, verbal abuse, and hunger, enduring countless hardships to ensure her son had rice to provide. She delivered the rice she begged for to the school canteen, but due to it being mixed rice, the school accepted only two bags before refusing the third. The mother, helpless, knelt on the ground crying out the truth, shocking the school leaders and the villagers who happened to see her begging. Everyone rushed to help, and the warmth of humanity flowed freely, completely ending the mother's begging. After her son was admitted to Tsinghua University, during the graduation ceremony, three bags of rice were placed on the stage, and the canteen chef recounted the story of the three bags of rice. The mother's story moved both students and faculty to tears. The principal helped the mother onto the stage, and the son came to realize that the mother who had begged to send him to university was his own widow...
