This film is based on the novel of the same name by British author Virginia Woolf. In England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the handsome noble youth Orlando (Tilda Swinton) is favored by the Queen and granted a mansion and eternal youth. Over the next four hundred years, Orlando first falls in love with the Russian princess Sasha (Charlotte Valandrey), then turns to poetry, funding the down-and-out poet Nick Greene (Heathcote Williams). Later, he represents King Charles II in a diplomatic mission to the Turkish city of Constantinople, where he is awarded a royal medal by Prince Henry (John Wood) on the night of fierce battles. After sleeping for seven days, Orlando wakes up as a woman and returns to England. The female Orlando rejects Prince Henry's marriage proposal and falls in love at first sight with the adventurer Selim (Billy Zane). Amidst the smoke of the Industrial Revolution and the flames of world wars, as a mother, Orlando rides a motorcycle into the 20th century. The film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, received nominations for Best Makeup and Best Costume Design from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and was awarded the OCIC Prize (for technical achievement in audio-visual effects) and the Elvira Notari Award (for special contributions to women's themes) at the Venice Film Festival.
