In the depths of winter in 1948, a writer (Jiang Wen) receives a thick letter on the night of his 41st birthday, written by a dying woman who expresses her nearly 20 years of love for him, of which he is completely unaware. 18 years ago, a 13-year-old girl fell in love with the writer who lived next door. After her family moved away, she never forgot him. Years later, the girl, now a female student (Xu Jinglei), returns to her old residence and finally has a chance to interact with the writer, but he has no memory of her.
