In the late Qing Dynasty, the master of Taijiquan, Yang Chongwu (played by Yu Hai), and his family live in seclusion by the West Lake in Hangzhou. In their old age, Yang Chongwu and his wife, Huiniang (played by Hu Huizhong), are blessed with a son, Yang Xuewen (played by Wu Jing). Xuewen is naturally gifted and has a love for martial arts, but his father fears he will get into trouble and insists he study diligently, forbidding him from going out. Secretly, Xuewen learns his father's Taijiquan and creates his own set of braided martial arts skills, practicing hard daily and acquiring excellent martial abilities.
During a rain prayer ceremony held by the Qiantang River, Xuewen and his cousin sneak away to participate in the Dragon King Festival. At the ceremony, Xuewen meets the talented lady Cao Yangyun (played by Zheng Liting), and falls in love at first sight. In order to pursue Yangyun, Xuewen joins the revolutionary party. His braided martial arts skills shine during the anti-opium movement, and his relationship with Yangyun deepens. However, the imperialists smuggling opium into China are not willing to let things be, and they secretly lay out conspiracies, leading to a deadly struggle.
