During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, the imperial concubine, Consort Tong, conspired with the eunuch Cao Huaruo from the Eastern Factory to elevate her son to the position of crown prince. They brutally murdered upright censors who advised the emperor honestly, creating a bloody storm in and out of the capital. Many honest officials aware of the truth fell victim to these atrocities. The assassin acting on behalf of Consort Tong and Cao Huaruo was Ma Xingkong, one of Cao Huaruo's adopted sons. Ma Xingkong's father was once a high-ranking court official. After his father, Ma Changyun, was unjustly killed in a political turmoil, young Ma Xingkong was taken in by Cao Huaruo, learning martial arts and reading under his tutelage, eventually becoming Cao Huaruo's tool for killing. With a death list co-drafted by his adoptive father and Consort Tong, Ma Xingkong repeatedly succeeded in his missions, leading to the beheading of numerous honest officials. As he began to feel remorse for his devilish deeds, he met a pure mute girl named Linger during a time of loneliness and hardship. The genuine feelings he experienced with Linger made him contemplate retiring from his violent life. Just as he began to think about stepping back, Cao Huaruo retaliated by sending his other adopted sons, Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan, to secretly harm Ma Xingkong for refusing to carry out assassination tasks. After their plans failed, Ma Xingkong completely severed ties with Cao Huaruo. To protect Linger’s safety, he fled the capital with her to an inn outside the city and entrusted her to a friend from the martial world, Liu Bingyu, while hiding the assassination list targeting Consort Tong and Cao Huaruo. Betraying his master, Ma Xingkong faced Cao Huaruo's wrath as Cao ordered Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan to pursue him relentlessly. They tracked him to the inn, where Liu Bingyu cleverly protected Linger, leading Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan to the remote cabin where Ma Xingkong was hiding. Ma Xingkong had prepared a grave for Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan at the cabin. Recognizing they were no match for Ma Xingkong, they attempted to ambush him, and Leng Zhan shot a poisoned dart, which hit Ma Xingkong. As his situation turned desperate, a masked hero suddenly appeared in the darkness to block Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan, allowing Ma Xingkong to escape despite his injuries. Ma Xingkong fell off a cliff and was presumed “dead.” Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan returned to the capital to report to Cao Huaruo. However, Ma Xingkong’s fate was not sealed; he floated down the stream at the bottom of the cliff and was saved by Master Huishan from the Shaolin Temple. Surviving against all odds brought a wave of vengeance towards Shaolin. Cao Huaruo personally took action, kidnapping Linger from the inn and heading for Shaolin to kill Ma Xingkong. Outside Shaolin, a fierce confrontation ensued between Ma Xingkong and Cao Huaruo, with the chief of the criminal department, Zhang Wuji, arriving with an imperial decree to assist. Cao Huaruo was slain beneath Ma Xingkong’s sword, allowing Ma Xingkong to settle his family feud and national grievances, leading him to embrace a life of Buddhist practice and goodness.
