The story takes place in a remote mountainous area, where Han Chong (Wang Ziyi) sets explosives for hunting. Unbeknownst to him, the explosives were not triggered by animals but by his fellow villager, La Hong (Yu Ailei), who accidentally stepped on them. The explosion critically injures La Hong, who ultimately succumbs to his wounds, leaving behind a poor mute wife (Lang Yueting) and a pair of children. After discussion among the villagers, Han Chong decides to privately settle the matter with compensation. However, the mute wife appears completely uninterested in the amount offered, seeming to wander in madness, leading everyone to believe that her husband's death has caused her to lose her sanity. Reluctantly, Han Chong takes on the responsibility of caring for the three of them.
