Homosexuality has existed since ancient times, and in ancient Greece, the cradle of European civilization, its status was once mentioned as being unprecedentedly higher than that of heterosexuality; since the advent of film, homosexual characters have appeared on screen, but their status has consistently been low, often hidden and elusive. Oscar winners Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (the directors of this film) have aimed to right this wrong, using the classic work “Celluloid Closet” as a basis for their study of LGBTQ cinema. They examine over a hundred classic Hollywood films, focusing on the traces left by LGBTQ characters and invite actors who have portrayed queer roles, such as Tom Hanks and Susan Sarandon, to share their experiences. Through the study of "homosexuality in film," they not only re-examine the history of Hollywood cinema from a queer perspective but also analyze the bloody history of how mainstream American culture has treated homosexuality.
