After Captain Taylor (played by Charlton Heston) sets the ship to automatic flight, it ultimately crashes on an unfamiliar planet in the year 3978. Taylor and two surviving crew members discover that the planet has a similar environment to Earth, and there exist humans without the capacity for language who survive by foraging. Before Taylor can conduct further investigation, a group of intelligent apes suddenly appears and captures the humans. The true masters of this planet are the apes, and humans are merely beasts for their hunting and study. Ape scientist Dr. Zira (played by Kim Hunter) and her boyfriend Cornelius are conducting research on human behavior and ape history. Taylor, who has temporarily lost his ability to speak due to a throat injury, soon catches Zira's attention with his attempts to communicate, sparking controversy in the stubborn ape academic community. In his quest for freedom, Taylor soon uncovers the truth about the Planet of the Apes...
