In the year 2035, humanity is afflicted by a virus developed by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, resulting in the death of most of the human population. Only a few have managed to survive, but they can only exist in the dark underground, struggling to stay alive. Scientists decide to send someone back in time to 1996 to trace the origins of the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. Prisoner James Cole (played by Bruce Willis) is chosen as a volunteer. By chance, Cole is sent back to 1990, and when he describes the impending disaster to the people of that time, he is perceived as insane and taken in by Dr. Kathryn Railly (played by Madeleine Stowe), who diagnoses him with schizophrenia. With the help of fellow patient Jeffrey Goines, Cole escapes and returns to the future. However, because the origins of the Army of the Twelve Monkeys remain unclear, Cole is sent back to 1996 again. This time, Cole discovers the Army of the Twelve Monkeys' origin in Philadelphia and finds Dr. Kathryn, leading them on an adventurous journey to uncover the Army of the Twelve Monkeys!
