A film like an invitation to someone's home. In his apartment in São Paulo, between brewing coffee and homosexual encounters, Marcelo's obsession and desire are casually and passionately displayed. Marcelo's closest confidant seems to be books, especially Novalis's unfinished novel "Heinrich von Ofterdingen," whose protagonist seeks an elusive blue flower. Marcelo is also searching for something, tracing the marks of his troubled autumn. The camera observes him, intently capturing his story, until a simple wide shot begins to reenact a chapter from his biography. Marcelo's words only nominally seem to occupy the center stage, as his body movements actually reveal more; they are reservoirs of memory. Marcelo's apartment thus becomes the stage of his life—glittering, intriguing, amusing, serious, and sincere. Directors Vinagre and Carneiro create a complete multi-layered universe from the flat independent cosmos of documentary staging. A blue rose is not only an open-hearted, intimate portrait but also a film that is both tender and captivating like blue petals.
