Although Trevor (Brendan Fraser) is a geology professor at a university, he often challenges traditional beliefs. He believes that Verne's novels are not science fiction, but rather based on real existence. This opposing theory has made him a laughingstock in the academia, ruining his academic reputation. However, Trevor does not care about this and firmly believes that his theory is correct. To validate his theory, Trevor embarks on a journey to Iceland with his nephew Sean (Josh Hutcherson) and local guide Hannah (Anita Briem). During the trip, the three accidentally discover a strange cave and fall through thin ice into an abyss. When they wake up, they find themselves in a mysterious subterranean world filled with various bizarre creatures, resembling the scenes described in Verne's novels. Evidence has finally been found, but how can they bring it back to the surface? Trevor and the others begin their quest for an escape...
