In a shabby apartment on the top floor of an old building live two struggling roommates for the sake of art: Roger (Adam Pascal) and Mark (Anthony Rapp). Mark has recently gone through a breakup; his girlfriend Maureen left him for Joanne, who prefers women. Mark’s previous roommate, Tom (Jesse L. Martin) - a computer whiz and an HIV carrier - was brutally robbed and ended up being rescued by Angel (Wilson Jermaine Heredia), a gay street drummer. They soon become a couple. Roger meets his neighbor Mimi (Rosario Dawson), who comes to borrow a match. Mimi is a stripper. Soon, Roger discovers that he shares the same secret and disease - AIDS - with Mimi, and they fall in love amidst their shared struggles. The three couples find themselves unable to pay the rent and are about to spend a Christmas Eve without heating or electricity, relying only on candles for warmth.
