David (Jake Gyllenhaal), Miranda (Rebecca Ferguson), Rory (Ryan Reynolds), Sho (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Hugh (Ariyon Bakare) are astronauts working on the same spacecraft. By chance, they discover an immature life form on Mars. Hugh brings this life form back to the laboratory, and unexpectedly, this tiny cell begins to grow rapidly under external stimuli. As the life form grows, the situation starts to spiral out of control; it demonstrates powerful aggression and advanced intelligence, killing several crew members. Furthermore, David discovers that the life form seems intent on landing on Earth along with the spacecraft, and if its plan succeeds, humanity on Earth will face a catastrophic disaster.
