Jack (Colin Farrell) and Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith) adopt a Chinese girl named Mika. To help Mika connect with her cultural roots, Jack buys a synthetic robot named Yang (Justin H. Min). As time goes on, Yang becomes Mika's best and most trusted friend, as well as an essential part of the family. However, as Mika grows up, Yang's functionality begins to fail due to aging components. Jack wants to find someone to repair Yang, but since Yang is a "second-hand" robot, there is no warranty. Using special means, Jack acquires a memory chip that contains all of Yang's memories since it left the factory. As he plays back these memories, Jack discovers some of Yang's unknown past.
