In 1988, in response to the skyrocketing crime rates, the federal government converted Manhattan Island into a massive prison, where inmates were left to fend for themselves, turning New York City into a city of crime. Fast forward to 1997, Air Force One, code-named "David 14," is hijacked by the National Liberation Front and ultimately crashes within the prison city, leaving the President trapped inside. Former Air Force hero and decorated Special Forces officer Colonel Plissken (Kurt Russell) is imprisoned for bank robbery, and the government decides to use him to infiltrate the prison city and rescue the President. Plissken has only twenty-four hours for his mission, and he finds his former war buddy, Sever, a subordinate of the prison city's underground ruler, "the Duke."
