Jewish math genius Maximilian Cohen (played by Sean Gullette) is obsessed with the world of numbers, believing that everything in nature can be explained through mathematics. He dedicates himself to uncovering the mysteries and patterns behind various signs of life through numerical deduction. However, the closer he gets to the answer, the more unbearable his debilitating headaches become. He discovers that the chaotic fluctuations in the stock market over the past decade are actually manipulated by an underlying mathematical pattern. Meanwhile, his research attracts the attention of Wall Street traders and a Jewish mystical sect. Caught between reality and the virtual world, Maximilian is heading towards madness. In February 1996, Darren Aronofsky began preparing this debut feature film with a budget of only $60,000. Two years later, "Pi" made a splash with its innovative concept and groundbreaking shooting style. It first won the directing award at the Sundance Film Festival, and the following year it took home the Best First Screenplay Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. In 2000, he again wrote and directed "Requiem for a Dream," which also received positive responses. In 2005, he was nominated as one of the "100 People to Watch in Hollywood."
