In the twenty-sixth year of the Qing Dynasty under Emperor Guangxu, the gun king Cheng Ziqing sought to procure firearms with the aid of the court to battle foreign invaders. Zhao Sanduo, leader of the Yellow Society, and Lin Heier, leader of the "Red Lanterns," mistakenly identify Cheng Ziqing as a spy, sending the Red Lanterns' Lianhua to assassinate him with a poisoned dart, alongside Huang Tuan's second-in-command, Gao Yuanxiang. Faced with the invasion by foreigners, a dispute arises between the pro-peace faction led by Guangxu and the pro-war faction led by Prince Duan and Prince Zhuang. The cunning Empress Dowager Cixi decides to let the Boxers clash with the foreigners. Cheng Ziqing persuades the deceived Gao Yuanxiang not to attack the German embassy, but Gao not only ignores the warning but also gets into a fight with the gun king. Suddenly, gunfire erupts, and Cheng Ziqing protects Gao Yuanxiang from danger. In a teahouse, the gun king warns Lianhua, wearing red shoes marked with the Red Lantern symbol, to leave quickly to avoid being tracked, which deeply moves her. One night, Cheng Ziqing seizes the opportunity to steal a foreigner's gun while visiting a brothel and overhears the foreign lackey Duan Dechang speaking to Sai Jinhua. He then encounters Gao Yuanxiang and is about to act when a falling roof tile knocks Gao down. The gun king saves Gao Yuanxiang, and they clash with the arriving Duan Dechang and others. The gun king goes to the Wang’s mansion to deliver guns and overhears a secret conversation between Prince Duan and Li Lianying, realizing that the court only intends to utilize the Boxers, leading to great disappointment. During the siege of the German embassy, he falls into a trap set by Klind, fainting after being outnumbered. Fortunately, he is rescued by Lin Luomi, the director of a charitable institution. When Lianhua returns to the camp, she encounters foreigners ambushing the "Red Lanterns," but luckily, the gun king arrives with his foreign gun team to break the encirclement. The gun king and Lianhua return to Beijing to find Gao Yuanxiang, only to discover he has fallen for a trap and set the embassy ablaze. Suddenly, Gao Yuanxiang is shot. After being rescued and taken to a church, the gun king and Lianhua meet with Pan Youhui, the third leader of the Yellow Society, and the gun king recognizes him as the masked attacker from the German embassy. Pan Youhui draws his gun, shooting, and Lianhua is fatally wounded while protecting Lin Luomi. The injured Gao Yuanxiang struggles to kill Pan Youhui with his bare hands, then stabs himself with the poisoned dart from Lianhua's hand. Empress Dowager Cixi decides to declare war on the foreigners. The gun king infiltrates the German embassy, captures Klind, who threatens him with Lin Luomi as a hostage. The gun king agrees to withdraw, but Klind suddenly shoots, killing Lin Luomi. Enraged, the gun king kills Klind.
