Humans have established a new home on a distant alien planet similar to Earth, but there is a virus on this planet that allows infected men to hear the thoughts of others and animals. Every man's thoughts can be heard by others, and there is no privacy among people. The men of the town of Prentisstown on the new planet cannot bear their thoughts being heard. Todd Hewitt (played by Tom Holland) is a boy born in this small town. He believes that the absence of women in the town is due to the indigenous species, the Spackle, intentionally infecting humans with a noise virus when their home was invaded, and they also killed all the females. Todd is convinced of this until he meets a girl. Todd encounters a girl named Viola (played by Daisy Ridley) in the forest near the town. She comes from distant Earth, and her spaceship has crashed in the forest. Upon learning this news, the mayor of Prentisstown immediately launches a hunt for the two of them. To protect Viola, Todd has no choice but to escape with her, embarking on an unexpected and perilous adventure on the planet.
